What Lithium-Ion Batteries Can Now Propel A Car 250 Miles On A Ten-Minute Charge

Pennsylvania State University Scientists have developed a new Lithium-ion battery that can be charged within 10 minutes and propel the electric car for a distance of 250 miles before it needs to be charged again. 

This news is massive for electric car users and the industry because the batteries of these cars are known not to charge quickly enough, and they are also costly to acquire. Usually, batteries are made with Cobalt and nickel. Therefore, they can overheat and cause the users to be at risk. Also, Cobalt is traditionally found in the underground environment, and sourcing them sustainably is very difficult. 

Therefore, the general idea is that an alternative battery would make electric cars more accessible and cheaper over time. This also has many advantages for the environment. These cars emit little to no carbon since they don’t run on fuel. Their increased availability means that there will be more people driving them and lesser people driving fuel-propelled cars. Also, the production of this battery means that minor damage will be done to the environment through the exploration of Cobalt. 

How does this technology work?

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are seen as the safer and cheaper option for electric car batteries, but they do not work well enough compared to cobalt and nickel batteries. 

However, Scientists at Pennsylvania University, Chao-Yang Wang, and other colleagues have discovered that the Lithium iron phosphate battery can work much better if they are first heated. 

During their study, these scientists warmed the batteries up to 60 degrees and kept them at that temperature. They discovered that these batteries performed much better than other popular battery types when held at the standard cool temperature.

This means that these cars can be in use for a more extended period after they’ve been charged.

This new lithium-ion self-heating battery is developed with a thin nickel foil that endings the negative terminal while the other creates a third terminal by extending out of the cell. As the electrons flow in it, the battery heats this foil through internal warmth and resistance heating of the storm. This raises the battery’s internal temperature, and once it gets to 140oF, the switch will open, and it will be ready to use. 

The self-heating method of this battery means that the anode and cathode of the battery can be made from low-cost materials. 

This battery's cathode is made from the thermally stable LFP (lithium iron phosphate) that doesn't have any critical and expensive materials such as Cobalt. On the other hand, the anode contains very large particle graphites, light, safe, and inexpensive. 

Another good thing about this self-healing approach is that it also reduces the unequal deposition of lithium around the anode, leading to dangerous lithium spikes. 

According to Scientist Wang, these small batteries can produce large amounts of power – 300 kilowatts and 40 kilowatts hours - after it is heated. So an electric vehicle using this battery can quickly move to 60 mph within 3 seconds from zero and feel like a sports car. This will help bring positive changes to the environment, beyond contributing to the fleet of luxury cars already in existence. Electric vehicles will become affordable for everyone. 

Other people working to produce more efficient batteries

The good news for electric car owners is that Pennsylvania State scientists are not alone in improving the batteries of electric cars. There are other people actively working on the same projects. For instance, an Israeli company has recently developed an electric car battery that charges within five minutes. This company also created a lithium-ion battery, and they have a goal to ensure that by 2025, the car can travel a distance of 100 miles after charging the battery for five minutes.
